Distance learning courses making it easier to continue education

Everyone loves the serenity of rural New Brunswick. The peace, tranquility and neighborly friendliness make it a safe haven for many who never want to leave.

But sometimes being a 40 minute drive or more outside of a major centre can make it difficult to get things locally. Many people have to travel into the nearest city to get what they need.

Thankfully, a non-profit organization is ensuring that learning opportunities are not on that travel list by offering adult learning courses and computer access centres in local communities.

Miramichi Adult Learning Inc. (MALI), in partnership with the Regional Adult Learning Coordinator form the department of Post-Secondary Education Training offers a series of adult education courses to help adults either upgrade their skills or obtain their GED (General Education Degree) in the comforts of their own community. They also oversee the community access centres, giving students and the community the option to utilize and familiarize themselves with computers.

Two examples of these groupings are in the Boiestown and Tabusintac areas. Both communities are at least a 45 minute drive from Miramichi, making it difficult to travel into the city on a regular basis for academic and computer training.

These programs and access centres have been a part of these two communities for some time, but acting separately. Recently, the two centres joined the MALI network, which combines all of the resources the network has to offer giving learners and communities more educational options.

In this week's Miramichi Leader edition we are featuring the Boiestown centre. Next week, we will focus on the centre in Tabusintac.

In Boiestown the adult GED programs, which are taught at the Upper Miramichi Regional High School, have been offered for about 10 years, according to MALI board member Wes Tingley — to great success.

"In the past three years, I would say we've had 20 to 25 people go through the program here in Boiestown," Tingley said.

Some of the adult learners have gone on and enrolled in other post-secondary training to prepare for the workplace and develop other specialized skills for the job market.

In fact, it's become so widely recognized that people as far away as Minto have inquired about the programs.

Tingley noted that since joining the MALI network, the Boiestown NOVA Learning Centre has become more popular. That is in part due to the board of directors who has strived to bring attention to the programs, and the local instructors who promote and advocate for Adult Education in the community.

"It is wonderful to have such programs offered in the local community," Tingley said. "I believe people recognize that learning is a life-long adventure. Now, in conjunction with MALI and the NOVA Learning Centre, opportunities are offered for upgrading and high school completion."

"Many of the jobs that once provided a livelihood and job security have disappeared due to changes with technology, restructuring and the current state of the economy. As a result, people are adapting and looking at retraining and other career paths," said Tingley.

The Boiestown branch of MALI lies within the riding of Hon. Rick Brewer, Minister of Human Resources who believes in the programs value.

"I have a sense that some people are apprehensive because they quit their education program when they were younger they're a little bit intimidated," Brewer said, adding that their self-confidence levels are often lower.

Brewer holds the program and staff in high regard for the sensitivity and training they offer students.

"There is nothing to fear," Brewer said, noting that a lot of people would be surprised to find out who took these courses. They would think ‘why didn't I do this a long time ago?'

Brewer even met a senior who finished his GED education a few years ago and could feel the sense of pride this man had.

Both Brewer and Tingley added that the programming works because the staff at the NOVA Learning Centre and MALI's board of directors recognize the need for flexibility concerning program and training needs.

"There is no doubt that the strength of the program lies in its respect of individual needs and requirements," Tingley said.

"Adult learners find the instruction to be very personalized and they appreciate the flexibility, care and concern from the instructors," noted Tingley.

distance learning may be lifestyle decision

MBA basics: Choosing distance learning can be a lifestyle decision

By Kester Eddy

Perhaps your work involves travel and you need the flexibility to study when and where you like; perhaps you can neither afford the time nor cost of tuition fees, along with (unpaid) time off work to attend a full-time or part-time MBA.

Or, you live, say, in Ukraine, but want an American MBA when no such school is available; equally feasibly, you live and work in the back of beyond, and want to stay there, many hours away from the campus and classroom.

Whatever, you have weighed up the options and decided to trust all to the digital age and take an online, or distance learning, MBA.

That, you thought, was the hard part; choosing a provider would be the easy bit.

But not so fast; online providers themselves offer a wide variety of programmes, and in some ways the choice is even broader than for a traditional MBA; remember, once online, it is just as easy for someone in Calcutta to choose a provider in Singapore or Spain as it is New Delhi.

This was fundamental to Franck Besseat, a French computer engineer, looking west in the choice of his MBA provider.

“I wanted a North American degree because I was already planning a move there. Online programmes are great for people who seek to relocate; you can prepare your integration for your future working environment,” he says.

Mr Besseat already fitted one of the classic distance-learning profiles; he had a busy job, including travel across time zones.

“This choice was driven by my working constraints; I needed a programme flexible enough to enable me to prepare my assignments off-line, and to log on at will, independent of time and location,” he says.

Sures Muniandy, a Malaysian national with a degree in life sciences, was another “classical” online MBA recruit: “I’m married with two kids. I was a sales manager in pharmaceuticals before my MBA. I wanted a university that offered flexible times, without attending classes, as I was travelling extensively; and I wanted weekends for my family,” he says.

In addition, living in Brunei, a small country with just one university, severely limited his choice for a conventional MBA.

So how to choose the specific school? The first criterion is the question of quality. An obvious question is to check on the accreditation of any online qualification. In addition, if the school also operates a conventional class-based programme, are the two degrees equal?

“Is the MBA/EMBA the same quality as that offered to students in class? Is it the same faculty, using the same resource materials?” asks John Toohey, head of the business school at RMIT, Melbourne, Australia.

Then there is the question of student support, an aspect easily overlooked, but crucial, he says.

“Does the school give the same student support to its full-time and on-line programmes?“

Then we come to another possible hurdle: how online is online? Some providers allow you to start and stop studies at any time. Some insist that students attend a short period at the home (or satellite) campus. This can be as little as one week per year on the “supported distance learning” MBA at the UK’s Open University, to two days every six weeks, on the “fast track” programme at Babson College, Massachusetts, USA.

Such stints clearly facilitate face-to-face learning and help create the “bonding” beloved by students on full-time programmes; but they also are a barrier to those unable to commit time in advance, either due to work or distance.

Both considerations were crucial for Mr Besseat, who chose a programme with the University of Phoenix, Arizona.

“I wanted a 100 per cent online MBA. In 2004, when I conducted my market study, there were not so many universities offering them. Further, I wanted a degree by a ‘recognised’ university, because some organisations like my then employer, the United Nations, did not recognise all on-line programmes,” he says.

Mr Sures chose Edinburgh Business School (EBS) of Herriot-Watt University, Scotland, for almost exactly the same reasons, although in his case, recognition was perhaps even more crucial.

“Perhaps, to pursue a PhD or move into a lecturing career, distance learning would not be the ideal choice, as it is so widely accepted in my part of the world,” he says.

However, EBS, as one of the pioneers of distance learning – well before the age of the internet – offers a well-respected and fully-accredited qualification.

“I certainly achieved my objective, gaining so much knowledge, all with good support from the faculty boards,” he says.

And while cost was not a major factor for Mr Sures, another advantage of the Edinburgh programme is flexibility in financing – EBS is a “pay as you play” programme, while many require a substantial cash outlay upfront.

What, however, about the post-graduation experience? MBA graduates from traditional programmes speak highly of the networks created at school.

Can relationships forged during on-line studies morph into the same highly-prized alumni networks post graduation?

Potential students should certainly enquire before signing up for any on-line programme, although Mr Sures’ experience may give them comfort.

“We have an official alumni [association] and an unofficial site – ‘Watercooler’. It’s famous; most EBS students get together to discuss issues. We’re all very well connected,” he says.

Distance Learning Programs for Graduation

Many people thought that the hiring of part-time program is very simple. Rather, it is as difficult as the inclusion in the program. Most schools adopt the same standards for processing applications for on and off campus programs. In the United States, every university has its own recognition process. You should contact the department of distance education in college or the credibility of online college you have chosen to apply a formality.

Graduate schools require a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college. GPA (Grade point average) as different from school to school. You must take at least one of the standardized tests for admission, as the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogy Test (MAT). Business Administration / Management courses require a higher management Admission Test (GMAT). Students with non-English speaking countries will have too TOEFL. Some universities have to write an essay or statement of objectives, while meeting demand. Letters of reference are of considerable weight.

As a rule, older people is difficult to get a good GRE / GMAT scores. Like most distance learning programs are designed for use by people who do not have enough time to participate on a regular basis in many schools, colleges, and to relax the traditional procedure for the admission of applicants over. Especially in a network of colleges are relatively flexible and give more attention to other criteria like GPA score, work experience and career.

The deadline for receipt of the degree varies from one school to another. Master's programs are usually completed within 18 months to two years, in the ordinary course. But the distance can take much longer, perhaps two to three years. Some colleges online facilitate faster completion of programs of distance education regular college. You can get a Bachelor's Degree Online in 13-18 months. Doctoral program by correspondence in May, four or eight years.

Improving the compensation and motivation are many people continue to correspondence courses. Studies show that graduates are working to earn 40-50%, not more than the graduates.

University of Phoenix Online Education

Online Education with the University of Phoenix

University of Phoenix Online Focuses on Team Learning

Unlike some other schools, the University of Phoenix Online focuses on Team Learning. For all classes, team assignments can make up to 20% of the student’s total grade. Consequently, students get more than they bargained for when pursuing an education at Phoenix’s online university (UoP online).

Online Education for those Working Full-Time

UoP online believes that distance learning shouldn’t be a solely individual or isolated effort. In an effort to help their students do better in their careers, UoP online believes that its students should get more practice working effectively as a virtual team. Besides submitting individual short answers and papers, students must also work as a part of a team, usually on a single course long project where the work on one week builds on the week done previously.

UoP online targets mature adults who have been in the work force for at least five years. The majority of UoP online students have been career oriented for some time. By designing their online classes so that they don’t require meetings at set times, UoP online helps busy individuals advance their educations. But don’t get the wrong idea; UoP online is not set up like other distance learning programs, say a correspondence course, where you set your own timeline. UoP requires you to be online at least four times a week to participate and you need to post assignments on a weekly schedule.

Effective team work is an integral part to a successful career. Many an interview has revolved around a person’s “team spirit.” Even online jobs require collaboration to a certain degree. UoP’s stance on online team learning might educate you on more than what you signed up for, too.

University of Phoenix offers degree programs in the following fields:

• Accounting
• Health Care

• Administration
• Human Services

• Business
• Information Systems

• Counseling
• Management

• Criminal Justice
• Marketing

• eBusiness
• Nursing

• Education
• Technology Management

• Finance

Online college courses lead to salary increase

Take online college courses that you can work around your schedule. Why go back to school? How about for more money? Studies show that the more education a person has, the more that person will make over coworkers who do the same thing but are less educated.

The more education you have, the more you get paid

Another reason you should consider distance learning courses is that it can help you change careers. If you’re sick of your current job and want another career, quit dreaming and starting working toward your goals. Recognizing the need to accommodate “non-traditional” students, more colleges are setting up online courses to help educate students via online campuses. They aren’t stopping with courses either. Many colleges offer complete degree programs that you can get entirely online.

When considering what online program you will enroll in, look at the following factors:

• Costs

• Accreditation. For example, the only state that will let you sit for the bar if you get an online law degree is California.

• Program requirements. What courses do you have to take to graduate? How many classes can you CLEP out of or get credit for courses you’ve taken elsewhere?

• Distance learning tools. What does the school use for its virtual classroom? Not all schools use the same online tools.

• What kind of financial aid is available to you?

Online programs are constantly being improved so if you looked into them a few years ago, you owe it to yourself to learn what educators have been up to in the meantime.

Change your career, change your life and get a new job.

what about Doctor of Philosophy {PHD} !!!

The doctorate is the highest university degree, it is possible to win. Whether a research doctorate (DPhil for the British), a DA (Doctor of Arts), or another variant, the PhD usually requires four to six years of study beyond master's level. To obtain a doctorate, the student student must take a course of study, do original research and write a thesis or dissertation publishable.

abbreviated Ph.D. or PhD for Doctor Philosophiae Latin, meaning "teacher of philosophy" (or, more rarely, D. Phil., For the equivalent philosophiae doctor) is a university degree by universities. In many countries, but not all countries in the English speaking world, he became the highest degree you can earn (see also higher doctorates awarded by universities in the United Kingdom, Ireland and some Commonwealth countries) and applies to graduates in a wide range of disciplines in the sciences and humanities. The Ph.D. has become a requirement for a career as a university professor or researcher in many fields.

Detailed requirements for awarding a doctoral degree varies across the world, but there are a number of common factors. In some countries (USA, Canada, Denmark, for example), most universities require courses PhD degrees. In many other countries (especially those with a greater degree of specialization at the undergraduate level, such as the United Kingdom), there is no requirement in general. It is not uncommon, however, for universities or departments to specify analogous requirements for students not already holding a master's degree.

In countries that require this course, there is usually a prescribed minimum amount of study - typically two to three years full time or a fixed number of hours of credit - to be held before the presentation of a thesis. This condition is usually waived for academic staff to present a portfolio of peer-reviewed published work. Candidates May also be required to complete a number of other training courses relevant to their area of specialization.

Business Administration online courses

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) holds a bachelor's degree in business studies. In most universities, the degree is conferred upon a student after four years of full-time study (120 credit hours) in one or more areas of business concentration. The general degree program typically includes courses and refresher courses for concentrations. Some colleges and universities call BSBA a BBA (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration), however, requirements and course content are the same.

Business Administration programs to be accredited in May indicate that the program of the school meets specific quality standards. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is generally regarded by some as the best known certification program for businesses, while others hold its own rules and methods of controversial ruling.

Program content

BBA programs expose students to a variety of subjects: accounting, business law and ethics, economics, finance, management information systems, marketing, operations management, organizational behavior and management, operations research and strategic management.

The Bachelor of Business Administration program allows students to specialize in one academic field, including:

California CPA Education Foundation

California CPA Education Foundation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Background

The California Certified Public Accountants Education Foundation (Education Foundation) provides continuing education and information to CPAs and other professionals. Founded in 1966, the Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization and a sister organization of The California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA).

CPAs are required to pass a Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination to receive certification. To maintain that license, CPAs must undergo 40 hours annually (or 80 hours biennially) of continued professional education (CPE). The Education Foundation's revenue comes from providing CPAs CPE via conferences, self-study, online courses, webcasts, in-house training and more.

History

In 1965, Arthur Sargent, former CalCPA executive director, suggested the formation of a foundation under which the professional development program could flourish. In addition to ensuring that all the funds raised from educational programs would be reinvested into additional educational programs, a foundation could pursue research into accounting and tax matters, and study the accounting educational programs of California universities and colleges. An ad hoc committee, chaired by Tindall Cashion, was appointed to investigate the feasibility of establishing a separate foundation. In June 1965, the CalCPA board of directors approved formation of a separate nonprofit corporation that would be a subsidiary corporation under CalCPA’s control. In March 1966, the board approved the articles of incorporation and the bylaws of the new nonprofit corporation, and the California CPA Foundation for Education and Research was born. The name was changed to California CPA Education Foundation in 1994.

Services

The Education Foundation offers:

  • 700 courses and conferences annually throughout California
  • Top instructors
  • Discounted pricing for CalCPA members
  • CE weeks in resort locations
  • Value-Priced discount program
  • Coupon books for firms
  • Self-study and online courses

  • Courses approved for MCLE for attorneys
  • Courses approved for credit for enrolled agents and certified tax preparers
